UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM ROLLS
OUT SENTILLION'S SINGLE SIGN-ON SOLUTION TO 19,000 COMPUTER USERS
One of US News & World Report's "Top
Hospitals" Leverages Sentillion's SSO and Context Management
Solution to Improve Caregiver Adoption of Clinical Information Systems;
Selects Sentillion for its Expertise in Large Scale Deployments
ANDOVER, Mass. - December 19, 2006 - Ranked by US News & World
Report as one of the best healthcare organizations in the country,
the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) has successfully
completed an implementation of Sentillion's single sign-on solution
for more than 19,000 individuals across multiple facilities. This
large-scale deployment includes three hospitals, 30 health centers
and 120 outpatient clinics. By leveraging Sentillion's strong authentication,
single sign-on and context management solutions, UMHS has been able
to improve caregiver adoption of its clinical information systems
by making it easier for them to access applications while improving
security and protection of patient information and overall patient
safety.
Sentillion's solutions are designed to facilitate and support clinical
workflow. Today, when a UMHS caregiver provides their username and
password, they are quickly and securely authenticated against the
hospital's enterprise directory (which in the case of UMHS is Novell
eDirectory®). Network access is granted and, through the power
of single sign-on, the caregiver is automatically signed into UMHS'
health information system, CareWeb, and Eclipsys® Sunrise Clinical
Manager (called UM-CareLink at UMHS). Additionally, the need to
search for patients in multiple applications is eliminated since
Sentillion's context management solution automatically tunes the
applications to the selected patient's identity, saving time, and
eliminating the potential for errors.
"The primary goal of this project was to ensure caregiver
adoption of UM-CareLink, our new Computerized Physician Order Entry
(CPOE) system. By providing a way for caregivers to toggle between
applications while still maintaining patient context, we have simultaneously
improved patient safety and caregiver satisfaction while preserving
information security. In order to meet this goal, we needed a vendor
that had the technical capabilities to meet our needs and who could
also point to successful large-scale deployments," said Francesca
Levey, technical team leader for the project. "Despite the
number of SSO vendors in the market today, we found that Sentillion
was the only vendor that had the expertise to take on an implementation
of our size and scope. This, along with the fact that we could get
everything we needed from one vendor and add capabilities in the
future, helped make them the obvious choice for our organization.
Now that we have gone live with the solution I can say we definitely
made the right choice."
The implementation team installed Vergence Authenticator and Launchpad
on over 12,000 desktops to support the facility's CareWeb implementation,
added access to UM-CareLink to this same set of desktops within
an additional week, and then added more than 3,000 laptops to the
mix. These 15,000 pieces of equipment provide access to 19,000 clinicians,
caregivers and staff at UMHS.
With more than 203,000 caregivers live on Vergence, Sentillion
leads the industry with successful deployments of user provisioning,
strong authentication, single sign-on, clinical context management
and privacy auditing. Sentillion's products are in use across North
America including nationally recognized institutions such as Christiana
Care Health System, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Pepin Heart Hospital,
Sharp HealthCare, Sisters of Mercy Health System, Sunnybrook Health
Sciences Centre, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and all
163 Veterans' Affairs Medical Centers.
